Nursing Shortage. What is your experience??? Does it exist in your workplace?

Nursing Shortage from the ANA

Comments

  1. Half of my med-surg unit is closed due to at least 12 RN openings. I am afraid to into my shift becuase half the time I am “mandated” to stay another 4-8 hours. I used to have 3-4 patients, but lately am in charge of 6 patients without a LPN to help me pass the medications. I am overwhelemed and my patients do not get the same care as I would like them to get.

  2. I am going on for my MS so I can get out of the hospital. My back hurts and I am worried I will make a mistake with medications I am so busy. I went into nursing to help people and be a part of a healthcare team but feel like I am drowning at times. I work in the ER.

  3. Whatever happened to the LPN? Depending on the scope of each state, but why would we not use the LPN on the floors as much?
I love the name of this website “just a nurse” Its a nice reminder that us nurses are more than “just a nurse” :)))))

  4. Makes business sense to use the LPN more and not pay double time to the travel nurse and their head hunter company. Beaucoup bucks $$

  5. Janis L Donahue says

After a recent experience I had, I couldn’t resist visiting “just a nurse”. I have a BSN, MSN, and doctorate degree in Nursing Practice. 25+ years in nursing with past 11 years as FNP. I’ve worked Peidiatric Intensive Care at large teaching hospital/level III trauma center, was on transport team, have national certification as a specialist in HIV medicine, Specialized training in management of HIV/HCV co-infection. Have been full-time faculty in graduate & doctoral nursing program at local University. And have had specialtized training and experience performing medical/Forensic exams on both pediatric and adult sexual assault patients, and child physical abuse exams. I was called to testify for the state regarding a pediatric secual assault exam i performed. The attorney for the state asked me to descibe my educational background, other training, and work experience. She then asked a few questions about the medical findings from the exam i performed. Then her final question was “Since you’re JUST A NURSE, did anyone else look at your photos and the findings?” I could not believe she would undermine the credibility of her own expert witness!
